Bad Bottled Water
For a lot of people, it does seem like the best way to get your intake of water. Hydration is important, but not when
But even though people may think that all bottled water is just water, this is far from true. Some brands can actually be quite bad for you and can cause health problems. Here are some brands that are best left on the shelves.
Zephyrhills
A lot of brands just bottle municipal water and then charge an absurd amount for it.
This is just essentially paying someone to refill a water bottle for you to drink out of. Even tap water can be much healthier for you. With this brand, it’s just water from Florida.
Deer Park
This brand has been given quite a low rating by the customers – a “D”
It appears that bottles can often be far worse for the environment than companies will let on. If you notice a weird taste it can be because of the low-quality plastic.
Crystal Rock Waters
The biggest thing that makes or breaks bottled water is the fluoride content, it really does make the difference.
Even though it may sound good like a nutrient but it is actually bad for your health even in trace amounts. Even if it’s a brand like Crystal Rock it’s not always 100% safe.
Ice Mountain
And a lot of the fluoride that’s added to water isn’t even because of a natural process.
Fluorosilicic acid is a waste product of phosphate fertilizer. It can actually be more harmful to humans than rat poison when it is a powder. It contains many metals like arsenic, lead, cadmium, and even radioactive materials
Ozarka
Another brand that you should never buy is Ozarka.
While most of the world’s bottled water companies have stopped putting fluoride in their water, many American companies still do it.
Belmont Springs
Belmont Springs is another one to avoid. There’s another reason to stop drinking bottled water that most people don’t know about.
The gross total of the bottled water industry is $11.8 billion off of 9.7 billion gallons of water. This means that bottled water makes an incredible $1.22/gallon across the nation which makes it 300 times the price of tap water per gallon.
Propel
Propel is apparently metallic and salty on your tastebuds, according to customers.
People describe it as water trying to be Gatorade. The texture is strange with the first sip.
Diamond Springs
Business Insider gave insight, “If we take into account the fact that almost 2/3 of all bottled water sales are single 16.90z (500mL) bottles, though, this cost is much, much higher.”
“It’s about $7.50 per gallon, according to the American Water Works Association. That’s almost 2,000x the cost of a gallon of tap water and twice the cost of a gallon of regular gasoline.” This means you should avoid Diamond Springs too.
Crystal Springs
Even if the water itself is safe it’s worth taking into consideration how safe the plastic bottles are. They need to be just as safe as the water.
It was found by German researchers that endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) were found in 18 bottled water companies. These chemicals could adversely affect development and reproduction. Crystal Springs is one of those companies.
Dasani
Dasani is produced by Coca-Cola.
It might be “as pure as it gets”, but it actually contains twice the amount of legally permitted bromate. This compound is often found in, you guessed in, municipal drinking water.
Mount Olympus
There is no “drink of the gods” here.
Bottled water manufacturers are not required to disclose as much information as municipal water utilities because of gaps in federal oversight authority. Customers have allegedly complained about the taste of this one as well.
Aquafina
This is a product of PepsiCo company.
It’s actually tap water, purified through a seven-step process. When pH tested, Aquafina comes up acid. This means that although you can drink it, it is not as good as alkaline water. It tastes a bit dusty, with some dissolved minerals and a little salt.
Sierra Springs
Another high-fluoride brand to avoid.
Also, always check if the bottle is BPA-free. Also, it takes 450-1000 years for plastic to start biodegrading, and with the amount of plastic being thrown away and reproduced each year, that’s a lot of excess plastic the world has to deal with.
What Do Instead
Since it’s already been proven that tap water is cleaner and cheaper than bottled water, there’s only one thing to do.
If you live in a place with good tap water, just have a stainless steel bottle and carry some with you. If you living in a place with less-than-good water, consider a filtration system. Or, do some research on which companies have safe plastic, no fluoride, and no other chemicals. They are out there.
